From the outside, your decisions might look impulsive, impractical, or even irresponsible. But you’re the one living your life. And sometimes you have to trust what you know about your own reality.

A while ago, I left my job. I didn’t have another one to go to, and I didn’t really know what I was going to do next. I just knew the job was becoming soul-destroying, and I couldn’t carry on as I was.

There’s still such a strong belief that we should have a “proper job”. Get up in the morning. Go out to work. Earn a salary. Come home again. I’d been working from home, and there was sometimes an assumption that because I was at home all day, I had it easy. So, I wondered whether getting out of the house and back into the world might be what I needed.

I found another job and started going into an office every day, but the reality wasn’t what I’d imagined. The office was dull and dreary, people barely spoke, and there was very little interaction. Instead of feeling more connected to the world, I felt more isolated and spent part of every day sitting in traffic, adding another layer of stress to a life that already didn’t feel right.

Eventually, I walked out.

I was frightened of letting my partner down because he believes strongly in having a real job. I knew how my decisions could look from the outside, but I also knew how I felt on the inside.

After that, I went back to what I knew and tried supply teaching again. That didn’t work either. The stress, the behaviour, even being hit at work. I left again.

By then, I was burned out and fed up, so I stopped.

Unsplash

For once, I didn’t feel the need to tell everyone exactly what I was doing or what my next plan was, partly because I didn’t know myself. I needed some time without explaining my choices and without trying to make them sound sensible. Without feeling the need to present a different version of myself because I was worried no one would understand what I was going through. I needed space to work it out for myself.

I’ve since started another office job. It’s a fixed-term role for a year, and for now that gives me some breathing space. The office is light and modern, and there is much more interaction.

I’ve also learned something through all of this. Working 8 to 5 every day isn’t really for me. It’s not necessarily the work itself, but the feeling that so much of my time and energy is taken up by it. I need more flexibility and freedom.

Now I feel that maybe work wasn’t entirely the problem in the first place. I kept changing jobs because I thought changing the job would change how I felt. Now I wonder whether what was really missing was everything outside of it.

I wasn’t living enough.

A different commute, a different desk or a different employer couldn’t give me that. Maybe that’s one of the harder things about reaching this stage of life. Sometimes you know that something needs to change long before you understand exactly what the change needs to be.

Other people may not understand why you’re making the choices you’re making. You might not even be able to explain them yourself yet. But there comes a point when you have to stop looking outside yourself for confirmation and trust what your own life is telling you.

I’m still working out what that means for mine.

I don’t need to find the perfect job; I need to create a life where work has its place but doesn’t take up all my time and energy. More freedom, experiences, and reasons to leave the house that aren’t about going to work. More things that make an ordinary week feel like a life rather than something I’m simply getting through.

Maybe that’s what I’ve been searching for; a different way of living in midlife. I don’t know exactly what that looks like yet. But I’m beginning to understand that knowing what I don’t want is part of working out what I do.

<a class="image-link image2 We think we need to feel certain before we apply for the job, join the class, leave the relationship, or try something new.

But confidence rarely arrives before the first step. It arrives afterwards.

Starting something new almost always comes with uncertainty. A new job. A new community. A different routine. You don’t know the people yet. You don’t know how you’ll fit in. You wonder whether you’ll cope.

Then your mind starts asking questions.

What if I fail?

What if I don’t stick with it?

What if I’m not good enough?

The trouble is, overthinking usually creates far more anxiety than the situation itself.

We’ve juggled school runs and deadlines. Cared for ageing parents. Sat beside hospital beds. Held families together when things fell apart. Learned new jobs. Started again after heartbreak.

Yet when it comes to choosing something for ourselves, we suddenly doubt whether we’re capable.

The truth is, you’ve already done countless hard things.

Marriage.

Motherhood.

Career changes.

Moving home.

Starting over.

Every one of those experiences was once completely new. You probably didn’t feel ready, and you probably felt nervous. It can feel bittersweet, but it also creates space to rediscover the woman you’ve always been.

Growing up, my son lived with me most of the time and saw his dad regularly. We did so much together. Days out, holidays, afternoons at the park and long walks with our dog, Elvis.

It was me, my son and Elvis. Our little family.

I’m fortunate that we’re still close. We see each other often, and he still gives me the biggest hugs.

These days, though, he has a family of his own.

Six weeks ago, I became a grandma. Since my grandson was born, I’ve found myself thinking more about when my son was little. Not with regret, but with a deep appreciation for those years we shared.

A couple of months ago, we were chatting about his childhood when I remembered I’d kept some old camcorder tapes from when he was about two years old. I had no idea what was on them, so I found someone locally who could transfer them onto a USB stick.

Watching those videos was like stepping back in time. There he was, my gorgeous little boy, smiling, talking, laughing and reaching out for cuddles. For a little while, I was right back there with him.

It reminded me how quickly life moves through its seasons.

There was a time when being Mum filled almost every part of my life. My days revolved around school runs, packed lunches, football kits, bedtime stories and making sure he was happy and safe.

Now life looks different, and I’m beginning to enjoy all that this chapter has to offer. I’ve realised that this stage of life brings something many of us haven’t had for years. Time.

Time to rediscover the parts of ourselves that quietly waited while we raised our families.

For me, that’s writing. Art. Learning. Having the freedom to explore ideas simply because they interest me.

Becoming a grandmother hasn’t made me want to go backwards. If anything, it’s reminded me how precious each stage of life is.

I loved being his mum when he was little.

I love watching him be a dad now.

And I’m learning to love this new chapter too.
<p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{"url":"https://womenrewritingmidlife.substack.com/subscribe?","text":"Subscribe Not because anyone else said it, but because that's the story I was telling myself.

Yesterday, I was chatting to a much younger woman. We ended up talking about ageing and appearance. She complimented my light eyes and dark hair and told me I looked good.

My first thought wasn't to believe her.

Instead, I thought about the extra weight I've gained over the years. In my twenties, I was a UK size 8. Now, in my fifties, I'm a size 14. My BMI says I'm overweight. Those facts seem to shout louder than anything else.

But later, I found myself thinking about what she had said.

Somewhere along the way, many of us become so focused on what we've lost that we stop seeing what remains.

Yes, my body has changed. Menopause has changed it. Time has changed it. Life has changed it.

But I am not the insecure young woman I once was.

I have lived. I have learned. I have survived difficult times. I have gained experience, wisdom, resilience and perspective.

I am still here.

I am still healthy.

I am still capable of creating a life that excites me.

Perhaps accepting ourselves in midlife is not about loving every wrinkle, every grey hair or every extra pound. Perhaps it's about recognising that our value was never tied to those things in the first place.

When I look in the mirror now, I am trying to see the whole woman.

Not just the weight she carries, but the wisdom she has earned.

This Substack is reader-supported. It earns respect. It reassures people. It tells the world that you’re successful, responsible, and making the right choices.

I’ve worked in education for many years. It can be rewarding, but it can also be exhausting, demanding, and stressful. Recently, I returned to working in schools and, if I’m honest, it didn’t take long for me to realise that I don’t want to spend the rest of my working life doing this.

The pay is good, and there was a time when that would have mattered more to me. But something has shifted. At 54, I find myself valuing different things. I want less stress. More freedom. More time. I don’t want to spend the next ten years rushing, recovering, and waiting for weekends or holidays to feel like myself again.

What I find interesting is how pleased other people are that I’ve gone back into education.

They talk about the money I’ll earn. They tell me they’re proud of me for having a “proper job” again.

I know these comments are well meant. But they have also made me realise how differently I see success now.

Recently, I mentioned that I could work three or four days a week and still earn more than I did in my previous job. To me, the attraction wasn’t the money. It was having more time and more space in my life.

The response was immediate.

“You could save more money.”

And there it was again.

More money.

More earning.

More accumulating.

I felt frustrated because I wasn’t being understood. I tried to explain that my brain doesn’t work that way anymore. The question I find myself asking now isn’t “How much more can I earn?”

It’s “At what cost?”

At the cost of my peace of mind?

At the cost of my health?

At the cost of spending years of my life feeling stressed and overwhelmed?

The older I get, the less interested I am in squeezing every last pound out of my working years.

What I want is a life that feels manageable. A life with room to breathe.

Perhaps that is one of the biggest shifts that happens in midlife. We stop chasing the life that looks successful from the outside and start asking what actually feels right on the inside.

And sometimes those are two very different things.
<p It wasn’t a decision I made because I suddenly felt brave, certain, or full of confidence. If anything, I felt apprehensive about what the future might hold.

I knew things weren’t right for a few years and I knew I needed things to change. I was doing everything myself, working, childcare, cooking, cleaning and all the time getting no attention or support. I was trying so hard to be better, to do more but that’s not what I needed to do.

No matter what I did, it wasn’t enough. I wasn’t enough.

I spent years believing I needed to try harder, be better, do more.

Looking back, I can see I wasn’t lacking effort. I was lacking support.

It was draining. I barely recognised myself. Even simple tasks felt overwhelming and I was carrying that exhaustion into every part of my life. My parents were concerned; they knew I wasn’t myself and that my energy was depleted. Everything felt too much. I was struggling at work, and I didn’t know how much longer I could keep holding everything together.

Within days of leaving, I felt lighter and calmer. The constant tension I had been carrying seemed to lift from my shoulders. Someone even commented on how well I looked. They said I was glowing.

I wasn’t glowing because my life had suddenly become perfect. I was glowing because I had finally listened to myself. I had stopped fighting what I already knew deep down.

The moment I made that decision, I wasn’t suddenly confident. I was simply honest with myself. The confidence came later, when I realised I could trust myself to make difficult decisions and survive them.

Confidence is often the reward for trusting yourself, not the requirement.

For many women in midlife, confidence has been buried beneath years of responsibility, self-sacrifice, and putting everyone else’s needs first.

We become so used to being the reliable one, the strong one, the one who keeps everything together, that we stop paying attention to what we need.

Looking back, rebuilding my confidence wasn’t about becoming braver. It was about becoming honest with myself. Learning to trust:

· Your instincts when they tell you something needs to change.

· Yourself enough to rest when you are tired.

· Yourself enough to say no without explaining yourself.

· Yourself enough to want more from life without feeling guilty for it.

Every time you listen to yourself, you send yourself a message that your thoughts, feelings, and needs are important. Every time you listen to what you know to be true, confidence grows a little stronger. Not because life suddenly becomes easier, but because you begin to trust yourself to handle whatever comes next.

And that is what confidence really is: trusting yourself.

Perhaps confidence is not something we find.

Perhaps it is something we rebuild.

One decision.
One boundary.
One honest conversation.
One act of self-trust at a time.

So instead of asking yourself whether you feel confident enough to make a change, ask yourself this:

What do you already know to be true?

And are you ready to trust yourself enough to act on it?

This Substack is reader-supported. What many women fear in midlife is something quieter and harder to explain.

Wasting what energy they have left on the wrong life.

There comes a point where exhaustion is no longer just physical. It becomes emotional too. You begin to realise how much of your life has been spent adapting, coping, surviving, pleasing, pushing through, and being the dependable one.

And after years of living this way, even thinking about change can feel overwhelming.

Not because you are weak.
Not because you are failing.
But because change asks something vulnerable of us.

It asks us to believe life could still feel different. That can feel frightening when you have spent years trying to keep everything stable.

Sometimes we call it “being realistic” when really we have become afraid of risking disappointment, failure, or uncertainty. Protecting ourselves can begin to feel safer than wanting more. Especially if life has already worn us down.

Many women quietly reach midlife and realise they no longer know what they want outside of their responsibilities. Not because they are selfish for wanting more — but because they became so focused on surviving that they stopped asking themselves what truly makes them feel alive.

And often, the fear is not:
What if I fail?

It is:
What if I try and realise I have outgrown the life I built?

That is a very different kind of fear.

Because once you begin seeing your life differently, it becomes difficult to unsee it. The longing for something more peaceful, meaningful, creative, fulfilling, or emotionally honest deserves your attention too.

Not every woman wants to completely reinvent her life. Sometimes the desire is much quieter than that.

A slower life.
More honesty.
Less emotional exhaustion.
More creativity.
More freedom to be herself again.

And change rarely begins in dramatic ways.

It often begins through small moments of truth:

admitting you are unhappy

setting a boundary without guilt

allowing yourself to rest

trying something simply because it interests you

reconnecting with parts of yourself you abandoned years ago

believing your life is still allowed to evolve

These things may seem small from the outside. But emotionally, they can feel enormous. Because when you have spent years ignoring your own needs, choosing yourself can feel unfamiliar at first.

The way we speak to ourselves matters too.

If your inner voice constantly tells you:
It’s too late.
Nothing will change.
You should be grateful.
Don’t risk making things worse.

…it becomes difficult to move towards life with hope.

But thoughts formed through years of fear, pressure, or survival are not always truth.

You are not fixed in place.

You are allowed to change your mind.
Allowed to grow.
Allowed to want more from life than simply getting through it.

And perhaps confidence is not something we suddenly wake up with one day. Perhaps confidence is what slowly grows when we stop abandoning ourselves.

One small choice at a time.

And sometimes, that is how we begin finding our way back to ourselves.

This Substack is reader-supported. We’re surrounded by noise — advice online, pressure from society, constant opinions about how we should live, eat, work, look, think, and behave.

Everyone seems to have an answer for what we should be doing. But eventually, something inside us becomes tired. Not just physically tired — soul tired.

The reason so many women feel disconnected in midlife is not because they are failing. It’s because they have spent years listening outward instead of inward. We become so used to doing the “right” thing that we slowly lose connection with what actually feels right for us. And midlife has a way of bringing that truth to the surface.

Children grow older and become more independent. Careers that once felt exciting can begin to feel draining. Relationships change. We may have experienced divorce, illness, grief, caregiving, burnout, or years of putting everyone else first.

Then perimenopause arrives and seems to magnify everything we’ve been ignoring.

What once worked no longer fits. The path we followed for years may suddenly stop feeling aligned with who we are becoming. That can feel frightening — but it can also become the beginning of something important. Because midlife is not the end of purpose, it is often the beginning of discovering your true purpose.

Not the version built around expectations, pressure, or survival — but the one that genuinely feels alive. True purpose isn’t always loud or dramatic. Sometimes it begins quietly.

A feeling.
A pull towards something.
An idea you can’t stop thinking about.
A desire for creativity, freedom, peace, meaning, or connection.

The things that energise us are often clues.

What lights you up?
What makes you lose track of time?
What are you naturally drawn towards?

You do not need to have all the answers immediately. Finding purpose isn’t about suddenly leaving your life behind or creating something perfect overnight. It doesn’t require a huge leap or a complete reinvention all at once. It begins much smaller than that. It starts with listening to yourself again and giving yourself space to think, creating quiet in a noisy world. It allows you to explore new interests, ideas, and possibilities without pressure.

Sometimes we stop ourselves before we even begin because we think we don’t know enough yet. But nobody starts fully prepared. We learn by trying, experimenting, failing, adjusting, and growing. Purpose is not found through perfection. It’s found through movement.

And when we ignore that inner pull for too long, life can begin to feel heavy. We may feel anxious, lost, emotionally flat, or disconnected from ourselves. We distract ourselves with endless scrolling, searching for the next thing to make us feel better, while becoming further disconnected from what we truly need.

But the answers we’re searching for are rarely found in more noise. They are found in stillness, in honesty, in reflection, in paying attention to ourselves again.

Midlife is also a time when many women begin questioning how they want to spend the next chapter of their lives. Some dream of building something of their own, changing careers, starting creative projects, or creating a more meaningful way of living and working.

That can feel scary — especially when financial security and responsibility are involved. But change does not always require reckless decisions or huge sacrifices. You do not have to have the perfect plan before you begin, you simply need to start.

Small steps matter.
Small acts of courage matter.
Small moments of choosing yourself matter.

The truth is, staying exactly where you are while feeling deeply unhappy also comes at a cost. You deserve to feel alive in your own life. And when you begin moving towards something that genuinely aligns with who you are, something shifts. Energy returns. Creativity returns. Hope returns. Your inner spark begins to come back.

Not because life suddenly becomes perfect — but because you are finally moving in the direction of yourself.

This Substack is reader-supported. process.

A place where we can talk openly about boundaries, burnout, evolving, confidence, creativity, mental wellbeing, starting over, and what it really means to refresh your life in midlife.

No pressure or perfection, just honesty, self-awareness, and small meaningful shifts.

Most of all, I want this to feel like a reminder: that your life is not over, you are not behind, and it is never too late to rise into your next level.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank"
